Cars produced in the former East Germany are not only exhibited in Dresden museums. The Trabi, short for Trabant, was one of the most widely produced cars. It has a plastic body and noisy polluting twin-stroke engine. For most people there was simply no other choice. After the Wende, Trabis disappeared from the streets of Germany as fast as locals could get their hands on second-hand Golfs and Opels.
In a convoy of up to eight cars, with a guide communicating via radio, you can wind through town at speeds up to 30 km/h (18 mph) – it feels a lot faster! This car is not modern so each driver gets instructions on how to operate it first and, if you do not crash it, a Trabi “driving license” is awarded afterwards. Two tours departing from Theaterplatz are available: 45 minutes cost Euro 12 to Euro 18 per person and 90 minutes are Euro 20 to Euro 30.
Trips are run daily between 10 am and 6 pm. From March to November, additional night tours are scheduled between 8 pm and midnight. If you cannot fit this fun tour into your Dresden schedule the same company helps to pollute Berlin air in a similar way. Prior reservations are required should you need an English-speaking guide.
